Showcase

The University of Alberta is more than bricks and mortar. It is the embodiment of the students who have walked its halls, sat in its classrooms and given their enthusiasm to their school for the last 100 years.

In creating the events that celebrate the U of A’s Centenary, past and present students participated in the planning and implementation of events, gifts and more, all of which showcase the university and its impact on the community of students it serves.

Some of the ways U of A students have contributed their talents to the 2008 Centenary include:

  • Katie Arndt, a Design 590 student, created the Centenary logo, while industrial-design students have competed to design specialized commemorative gift items.
  • Fine arts students and faculty collaborated to create Agave, a limited-edition fine arts print portfolio.
  • The Department of Drama’s graduating students, along with Don Hannah, the U of A’s inaugural Lee Playwright-in-Residence, produced the world premiere of “While We’re Young” to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary.
  • Five-hundred choral and music students performed the “Choir of Choirs” with the University Symphony Orchestra.
  • On September 3 students from across all departments and campuses will come together to help celebrate the University of Alberta at its 100th birthday party.

These are only some examples of the countless number of students who have contributed their energy to making the Centenary a year-long celebration of music, art and events for students, guests, alumni and community members.

Like those who have come before them, U of A students continue to give their best to the university. As the year continues, watch for more events and spotlights on students, celebrating their achievements and contributions to the University of Alberta’s Centenary.
