President's Message

Indira SamarasekeraA century ago, our first president, Henry Marshall Tory, said the University should provide for “the uplifting of all the people. It should strive to find the answers to the economic and social problems of common everyday people and then share its knowledge with them.”

Since 1908, the essence of the University of Alberta and its commitment to serve through knowledge has remained. The institution has grown to become world renowned while remaining true to its Alberta heritage.

As we mark the grand milestone of our centenary, I must salute the generations of alumni, students, faculty, and staff, for they are our greatest achievement alongside breakthrough discoveries. I thank our communities, government, industry, and stakeholders for all of their support.

In 2008 we will celebrate and reflect upon our achievements but the University of Alberta will look to the future—to anticipate what lies ahead; to influence the world through teaching, research, and good works; and to remain a university dedicated to greatness for the benefit of all people.

Together, we have helped make the University of Alberta an institution of which Dr. Tory would be so very proud. Please celebrate that with us.

We have many special events planned throughout our centenary year, and we invite and encourage everyone to join us.
